How does this keep happening? What makes a person angry/hurt/rejected to such an extent that they would murder another human being, let alone 33 other human beings? And why is it always in schools that this type of massacre occurs? They know that it has happened before, each and every one of those individuals is aware that it has become terrifyingly frequent since the tragic events at Columbine; none of them act out of ignorance to what came before. Is that why it keeps happening? Do they see that it was the way that someone else got the attention that they deeply needed, and think that it is their last option to? Why is there necessarily a “last option”?
Last September’s shooting at Dawson College in Quebec was the closest to home any of these horrific “school shootings” has been. It was scary and reminded me of coming home from school in 1999 and being shocking and stricken by the images of the students fleeing in terror, having seen their friends shot in front of them at Columbine. Even now those images bring tears to my eyes, and trying to talk to The Welshman causes a lump to rise in my throat. This is not helped when he informs me that he knows someone who goes to Virginia Tech. Thankfully she didn’t go to school today, by some miracle. But 33 other students did go to school, and will never go home, 29 others will never be the same. I can’t help but think of their friends and families in the coming weeks, and those still waiting for news.
